Setting our Sights on God
Each of us views life through a different lens based upon our experiences in life. We see things based upon how we were raised, what we were taught, what we have learned through personal experiences, as well as what we aspire to in the future. The future guides us, but the past has an engrained effect on our lives that we often times do not see. Our past tends to take our habits captive unless we realize what is happening, but our future and our aspirations can change the course of our life when we focus and dream about what lies ahead of us. Our future can also paralyze us with fear if we let the what-ifs and uncertainties control us.
Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.
Paul continued on to explain what some of the things of earth were and contrasted them with the things of heaven to show the good things that God has for us when we keep our eyes on Him. This passage immediately follows Paul’s explanation about how if we are in Christ then we have died with Him and that we have been released from the spiritual powers of this world and are no longer bound by keeping the rules of this world. He went on to explain that the rules of this world do not provide help in conquering our evil desires. (Col. 2:20-23).
This next part is extremely important because this is often times where people who do not read the Bible in context and in the whole get it messed up. This is where people who teach only about God’s grace get things messed up because of a failure to recognize that Paul is not saying that we should do whatever we want because Jesus’ death has released us from the punishment of our sins. Instead Paul is arguing that following the rules of this world will never save us or stop us from sinning, the only thing that will save us and stop us from sinning is setting our sights on the realities of heaven.
When we place our focus on Christ and serving Him rather than on the things that we or society tell us we should do then Christ begins to change us from the inside and the things that are not of Him begin to fall away. If you have ever gotten extremely focused on following Christ, loving people, and sharing Him with others you have experienced this. When we receive Christ we also receive the Holy Spirit who is working within us to change us, but that change will only occur as we keep our focus on Him.
There is nothing that you or I can do to cleanse ourselves, the only thing we can do is to follow Christ and to keep our eyes fixed on the realities of heaven and let God change us as He changes our hearts and renews our mind. May God bless you today as you set your sights on Him.
