Never Enough Money

Never Enough Money

Does it ever seem like you work hard day in and day out, but there is still not enough money? Do you ever wish that you had more taking on overtime or another job to pay an unexpected expense or to pay for a vacation? Some days it seems like there is just never enough money and that no matter how much work is done that there will never be enough money, but what if there was enough money? How different would your life look if you felt like you had enough money?

The interesting thing is that most of us actually do have enough money to live on though. The problem is not the lack of money, but rather the lack of contentment. This is a difficult topic, because it’s difficult to learn to be content, but it’s worth it. When we learn how to be content with what we have there is a certain peace that falls upon us that we did not have when we were constantly planning what we would buy next or where we would go.

Contentment is the foundation to experiencing financial freedom!

“Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 5:10).

The only way to ever have enough money is to first experience contentment. Whether you have $5 or $5,000,000 will not matter if you are not content with what you have. You will never truly experience joy until you learn to be content, because there will always be more money, more riches, more stuff to be had. If our eyes and our heart have not learned to be thankful for what we have and content then no amount of riches will ever satisfy us.

Contentment is the foundation to experiencing financial freedom, but trust in the Lord is the foundation to contentment. When we put our trust in the Lord we can be content with nothing, because God’s Word is truth and His Word tells us that when we seek Him first and to promote His Kingdom that we will receive that provision that we need to survive. He tells us that we do not need to worry, but that we need to trust in Him and He will take care of us (Mt. 6:25-34).

When we learn to be content with what we have we can start making headway with our finances. When we learn that we do not need some commercialized item and furthermore when we learn that there is nothing that we can buy in this life that will make us happy then we can begin our path to financial freedom. Without contentment there is no freedom!

Think for a moment about how you would feel if you did not have any debt. Would you be able to pay your bills, put food in your family’s mouths, clothes on your backs, and still afford to put gas in your car? Debt represents a lack of contentment in the past and will continue to represent a discontentment in the future until your outlook changes. It will never matter how much or how little you make if you never learn to be content.

If you are already debt free, but have not yet learned contentment then think for a moment how different you could feel if you did. When we are discontent we have additional stress that is unneeded. Contentment and motivation are two very different things so do not think that if you learn to be content that you have to lose your motivation; however, your motivating factor might have to change if you trying to achieve contentment through riches. How much more joy could you have in life if you learned to be content?

No matter where you are financially you can be content. If you learn to be content with little you will be able to enjoy having more in the future, because you already learned to be content. If you already have riches you can learn to be content and start living life to the fullest with gratitude and thanksgiving. Discontentment robs us of our joy and our freedom, conversely learning to be content in all things within Christ will give us unspeakable joy and a resounding peace that others will be able to see and feel in our presence.

I pray that we all would learn a deeper level of contentment, because of the hope that we have in Jesus. I acknowledge that there is no amount of money that will cause me to be content, because there is always something more to be had, but with my eyes fixed upon Jesus I can learn to be content in all things whether I have a little or a lot. Help us Lord to know you fully and to experience true contentment and joy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
