Experiencing Financial Freedom

Experiencing Financial Freedom

Today I want to talk to you about experiencing financial freedom. Financial freedom will look different for each of us, but the feeling is the same. When you reach the point where you have not only learned to manage your money well, but to the point where you are no longer enslaved to any lender there is a complete and utter sense of freedom. That freedom comes from knowing that you are no longer paying someone for something that you bought in the past. Freedom is experienced, because you can now look forward to your future and the wealth that you will create and the freedom that you will have to be able to live a life of generosity that will help to bring a change to other people’s lives.

Anyone who has ever been in debt has experienced the reality of what it feels like to owe someone money. I know that I personally lost a part of me when I got into debt, but when we finally broke through those chains that debt had placed around us we began to experience freedom. We knew that even though we were still on a journey with our finances that we could now focus on building our wealth while living generously alone the way.

The Word of God is filled with instructions on how to handle our money and our motives with money. It is filled with precautions such as the oft misquoted 1 Timothy 6:10 which really says that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.” It is also fill with encouragements such as 2 Corinthians 9:6-9 which says…

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”

With your spending under control and your finances in order you have placed yourself in the position to be able to start building wealth while helping others along the way. One of the first things that you should do is to build up an emergency fund that will help provide you with finances to be able to cover roughly 3-6 months of living expenses should anything arise in life.

Proverbs 21:20, NIV
The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.

At the same time the Bible also addresses the reality that no amount of money will save you from death and that your focus should be on storing up for yourselves treasures in heaven rather than treasures on earth. (Mt. 6:19-20). This is a warning about where your devotion lies. If your concern is with storing up treasures on earth for the sole purpose of gaining wealth then you are serving the one who is of the world and we cannot serve two masters.

On the other hand if you realize that “In him all things were created…all things have been created through him and for him” (Col. 1:16) you will keep in mind that everything you have has been given by the Creator which should elicit a sense of thankfulness and gratitude. With that right understanding about your possessions you can begin to make an appropriate decision about how to handle your money without getting caught up in loving your money.

Storing up some money for lean times in the form of an emergency fund is only one step along the way of experiencing financial freedom. There are other steps that should follow with the ultimate goal of experiencing the complete freedom of knowing that you are being wise with what God has given you and that you are being obedient to all that He is calling you to do. In the end your freedom will allow you to provide for the needs of many more than you could have ever thought possible while enjoying the blessings that God has given you.

I do want to make one final statement and warning about all of this though because there are many false teachings about money and God’s blessing. God’s Word does not say that all will prosper, it does not say that all will be rich with goods, it also does not say that you will go through life without facing trials. If you try to achieve anything with impure or selfish motives then you will reap the reward of that, you may become rich but will likely never feel free, but if you follow God and do all that He asks of you then you will never be without and that He does promise.

Matthew 6:25-34
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

May God bless you on your path to finding financial freedom as you rest in the freedom that can only be achieved by accepting and following His Son.
