Ask, Seek, Knock
Let’s face it, we have a tendency to walk around stressed out. We are stressed about being busy, about making sure we are doing the right thing, about being good husbands/wives, about our future, etc. The list of things that stress us out can go on and on, but the individual stressors do not have to control us. There is a better way to live life than to be stressed out about it.
Our lives are “a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes”James 4:14 so why do we continue to worry about these things? We like to believe that we have control over everything that is happening in our lives, but nothing could be further from the truth, so why continue to worry about these things when we could truly enjoy life and live life on purpose?
When we get to the point where we are able to realize that we don’t even know what will happen in our life tomorrow and learn to trust in the Lord and say instead, “if it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that”James 4:15 it is then that we will truly be able to live. Life is short and the older that we get the more apparent this reality becomes. How much greater it is to live life according to God’s purpose and to let Him worry about the details. We have a duty to work diligently and to live our life in accordance with His Word, but it is only God who is able to add even a moment to our lives, and before we know it all that we worked for and stressed over in life will be gone.
Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.”
And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
True riches can only be found in following Jesus. There is no amount of wealth or fame that will fill our lives with joy, we may experience a moment of elation, but this too is fleeting as there will always be more to be had, but when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we have gained more than any riches or amount of fame could ever cause us to have. When we learn to follow Him and to trust him in all things we can truly experience freedom in our finances as well as experience the joy of blessing others with all that we have been blessed with.
Society will tell us that we can find happiness in stuff and in riches, but it is not true happiness, it is but an illusion that lasts for only a moment. When we instead learn to live a life of gratitude toward God who has blessed us with all that we have we learn to be more content in life. When we learn to be content in all things we no longer feel the need to spend every last dollar on stuff that we do not need and instead will begin to focus on paying off our debts and handling our money that way that God has instructed us to. These things do not happen on accident though, they must be done on purpose and it requires knowing and following God’s Word.
There is a better way to live than to live life stressed out over finances. Rest can only be found in Christ and by abiding in His Word. It takes intentional focus, prayer, and time in God’s Word, but you too can experience peace in your life, even in the midst of trials. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Mt. 7:7-8
