John 14:1-7, (NIV)
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Back in biblical times, the courtship process was often long as the suitor would work to build up the necessary wealth to pay the bride price as arranged with the family and then once the bride price had been paid both the man and the woman would return to their respective homes. For the next year the man would prepare their home while she would prepare for married life by learning how to be a wife. The home that the man would prepare would be an addition to his father’s house. It had to be a suitable place to bring his bride and for his family to begin. While the groom would be building their house the bride would be learning all that she had to learn about being a good bride so that her groom would be pleased.
When Jesus said, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you” (v. 2) He was making direct reference to the process that a bride and groom would have gone through as they entered into a marriage agreement in anticipation for their union where they would have become made one flesh (Mk. 10:8). Jesus is our groom and the church is His bride. Our representation of marriage is directly correlated with our union with the Lord which is why the sanctity of marriage is so important. It is not just a legal document or arrangement; it is a direct representation of Christ and the church. Jesus has already paid the price for us and He has now gone to prepare a room for us, but we have a part to fulfill as His bride. We are to prepare ourselves to return to His house with him. How are you preparing yourself today?
